Craft beer bar B.B. Rover’s renewed its Research Boulevard lease for the next three to four months

B.B. Rover’s Cafe and Pub, a North Austin bar and restaurant institution for 31 years, was in danger of closing at the end of 2018. A Facebook post advertising a closing party elaborated that the restaurant’s lease at 12636 Research Boulevard will likely not be renewed. The “End of an Era” party was scheduled for Sunday, December 16, from noon to 10 p.m.

However, according to a recent article in Community Impact, B.B. Rover’s secured a lease for an additional three to four months. The kitchen will be open on a limited basis, and is looking to hire servers and cooks. The long-term future of the restaurant is still uncertain.

Owners John Gross, David Dunn, and Eugene Downing wanted to sell or close the restaurant and bar due to rising costs and looming retirement, according to Community Impact. The restaurant is known for a wide beer selection and for promoting local and craft breweries (like recently reopened Celis Brewery), as well as serving classic pub fare. The bar also celebrates a “101 Club” for people who have tried 101 beers at the bar (it boasts over 1400 members).

As outlined in a previous Community Impact story celebrating the bar’s 30th anniversary two years ago, B.B. Rover’s opened in 1987, under Gross, and Jack and Diane McClary, a couple who traveled the world to sample beer (the labels they collected make up the table and bar tops). At the time, Jollyville Road had just been paved.

B.B. was an offshoot of Houston’s bar TV Rover’s, and named after Rover, an African gray parrot who once lived in the bar (but now is commemorated in a neon sign).

B.B. Rover’s joins several other Austin legends that closed this year, among them The Frisco, Dolce Vita, Frank & Angie’s, and the south location of Threadgill’s.

The North Lamar space will be turned into a new restaurant called Rosedale Kitchen & Bar.

Guild’s last day of service on North Lamar will be on New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31. The relocated Guild and new Rosedale restaurant are set to open in early spring 2019.

Guild is still negotiating its downtown address, but It’s safe to predict that Guild’s downtown home will be in the former Counter 3.Five.VII space at 315 Congress Avenue, since sibling restaurant Swift’s Attic is right upstairs.

Guild originally opened with a neighborhood restaurant peg in March 2018, but parent company Chameleon Group decided that a more intimate space would better show off executive chef Sterling Ridings’ approach to seafood. (Ridings used to be the executive chef of Uchiko.)

Rosedale Kitchen will embrace that casual neighborhood vibes, with a focus on what it deems as “healthier” and comfort foods, i.e. grain bowls, juices, pastries, and weekend brunch. There is no attached chef at this point.

Guild received mixed reviews from Austin critics. While Statesman critic Matthew Odam admired the effort behind the lofty menu, he ultimately found a lot of misses. Austin Monthly critic Jolène M. Bouchon didn’t think Guild was a neighborhood (read: comfortable, affordable) restaurant, and encountered poor service and dishes that “fell flat.”

Guild is the Chameleon Group’s third restaurant, after downtown restaurant Swift’s Attic and Chinese restaurant Wu Chow, and Rosedale will be its fourth.

Interstellar has been smoking up the usuals (brisket, pulled pork shoulder, sausages), and other items like red pepper chicken, white queso, and all sorts of sides (pinto beans, slaws, salads), since July. Pop-ups have been held in places like Jester King Brewery and even Noble Sandwich Co.

The duo isn’t new to smoking meats either. The shop’s menu includes sandwich fillings include that famous smoked duck pastrami, smoked pork belly, roast beef, and barbecue-perfect pickled vegetables.

Noble Sandwich’s Burnet Road restaurant will remain a sandwich shop. It’s also focusing on opening its Austin-Bergstrom International Airport location too, pegged for 2019 as well.

District Kitchen + Cocktails is taking over pan-Asian restaurant Suzi’s China Grill, which closed over the weekend

District Kitchen + Cocktails, the New American restaurant down in the Circle C neighborhood, is expanding with its second location up in North Shoal Creek. It’s taking over pan-Asian restaurant Suzi’s China Grill at 7858 Shoal Creek Boulevard. The new District North is set to open in spring 2019.

Suzi’s, which opened back in 1997 from Suzy Yi, officially closed on Saturday, December 15.

As for District North, chef Amir Hajimaleki will offer up the same New American menu, like scallops and risotto, prime wagyu steaks, burgers, and a raw bar, plus newer dishes too. It’ll serve lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.

Rounding out the new restaurant’s team (nicknamed District North) is chef de cuisine MacKenzie Viglianco from District Kitchen’s other restaurant, the gastropub Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar, and executive pastry chef Dennis Van, who also oversees the same department for District and Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar (another one of Hajimaleki’s restaurants).

The District North space will be designed by interior design firm Design Hound, with a similar look to the original District Kitchen with warm wood tones, pops of color, and more greenery out on the patio. Above the restaurant, which resides on the street level of the building, is Filipino restaurant Be More Pacific, which had taken over what was Suzi’s pizza restaurant Rebel Pizza Bar.

Hajimaleki and his brother Ali Hajimaleki opened District Kitchen in Circle C in 2013, followed by bar and grill Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar in 2015 in far northwest Austin.

Hajimaleki is also working on opening a Persian restaurant at the same time. Though it doesn’t currently have a location, Roya will focus on Iranian food, like kabobs. To get ready for that, he’ll host dinner pop-ups leading to the eventual opening.
