Gone are the days that Round Rock was little more than a sleepy suburban sister to Austin's bustling boom town. Since 2010, the area's population has increased, and with that growth comes an increased standard of living. This means that Round Rock residents need not make the trek down I-35 into Austin for excellent breakfast to hearty lunch to sophisticated dinner and cocktails.

Here is a sampling of what Austin's neighbors to the north have to offer when it comes to dining out: comfort food from Jack Allen’s Kitchen, giant doughnuts from Round Rock Donuts, solid pizza from Fire in the Hole and Fire & Ice, and more. This update includes Veracruz All Natural and Salt Traders Coastal Cooking.

Check out Eater’s picks for the best restaurants within driving distance of Austin. Keep up with the rest of Eater Road Trip Week on Eater Austin, as well as the other sites.

Everything below is listed in an unranked order. Is your favorite Round Rock restaurant missing? Leave it in the comments, through the tipline, or over on the forum.

With updates by Nadia Chaudhury.

Round Rock Donuts

It's hard not to crave the iconic yeast creations with the signature yellow glaze. It's horrifying to think that we nearly lost this treasure when the original Round Rock Donuts building was destroyed by fire in 2000.

High Country Market & Cafe

Known as the "Gourmet Gas Station," High Country is the place to gas up the car, then enjoy a breakfast taco or a burger, and a craft beer before hitting the road again.

Hoody's Subs

Hoody's has been serving up Philly cheesesteaks (and Philly nostalgia) in Round Rock since 1989.

Veracruz All Natural

Veracruz All Natural finally has a proper home to call its own. The brick and mortar offers the food truck the opportunity to experiment with specials, like enchiladas, all the while offering its famous breakfast tacos and more.

In-N-Out Burger

The California burger chain made its first entry into the Central Texas market with this location. Now there are seven Austin-area spots all together.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

Hopdoddy expanded its restaurant family in early 2016 with the Round Rock branch of the burger bar, where northern denizens can enjoy its burgers and fantastic shakes.

Fire In the Hole

Opened in spring 2014, Fire in the Hole specializes in wood-fired pizzas, small plates, and a sophisticated beer selection.

Fire & Ice Pizza Bar

This locally-owned pizza joint offers up a full bar, pizzas, wings, hoagies, and all the televised sports a person could ask for. There's a location out in Georgetown, too.

Deckhand Oyster Bar

Diners say that the seafood at Deckhand wins the freshness game, no small feat given Round Rock's landlocked locale. There's a lot to offer here, from fresh oysters to po'boys and Thai dishes like Crying Tiger. Not to mention lots of beer.

Tortuga Flats

Owned and operated by Round Rock natives, Tortuga Flats styles itself as a "Mexican Icehouse," serving as a watering hole with Tex-Mex food. The menu includes standard fare like fajitas and enchiladas, and the bar boasts an extensive roster of tequilas.

Jack Allen's Kitchen

Jack Gilmore's chicken fried steak could not be contained to the southwestern suburb of Oak Hill. When you think about that steak, along with the pimiento cheese, tacos, enormous salads, and generous cocktails, it's kind of amazing that central Austinites haven't lobbied City Council for their own location of Jack Allen's.

Salt Traders Coastal Cooking

Also under the Jack Gilmore umbrella is seafood restaurant Salt Traders Coastal Cooking, which takes the chef’s approach to water-dwelling creatures, which means clam chowder fries, fish enchiladas, and seared scallops.

Greenhouse Craft Food

Chef Rob Snow arguably fired the first salvo in Round Rock's current dining renaissance when he opened Greenhouse Craft Food in 2013. Tired of all the chain options, he opted to hang his own culinary shingle, specializing in turning locally sourced ingredients into approachable items like burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Nightly chef specials include honey curry black bass and cauliflower tacos.

Louisiana Longhorn Cafe

Louisianans hankering for the cuisine of home can probably find what they're looking for here, from fried alligator to frog legs to hurricanes. And if you want to watch a Saints game while enjoying your meal, this is the place to do it.
