Austin cafe/bar/beer garden Cosmic Coffee is already working on its third location. The new Cosmic will be found at 10006 Menchaca Road — taking over what was previously the Indian Roller bar space — in the far south Austin neighborhood. There is no projected opening timeline yet.

For this third Cosmic, parent company Cosmic Hospitality Group is leasing the five-acre space. There are also plans to build a 2,500 space on the property. Currently, the company is fundraising for the project, with construction set to begin in the winter.

It’s fair to expect Cosmic’s usual mixture of coffee, coffee drinks, beers, cocktails, and some sort of food offerings. And then there should be its usual approach to sustainably and eco-minded features such as composting, gardens, and ponds.

Cosmic Hospitality Group’s co-partners are Paul Oveisi, Patrick Dean, Jason Stevens and John Butts. Oveisi and Dean opened the original Cosmic in the Dawson neighborhood off South Congress Boulevard in 2017. This one includes food trucks, including the lauded new-school barbecue truck LeRoy & Lewis, taco truck Pueblo Viejo, and chicken wing spot Tommy Want Wingy. The second Cosmic — dubbed Cosmic Saltillo — opened recently in September in East Austin. And for food, this one includes Cosmic’s first-ever taco restaurant, Cosmic Tacos.

Indian Roller owner Brenna Robertson opened the bar in 2014. There had been plans to expand with a coffee/wine/concert venue space on the property but that never happened. The bar closed in October 2022, noting that the team was looking for a similar business to take over the address who will “keep the Austin dream alive” and embrace South Austin’s “weird, unique, and soulful” vibes. Presumably, this is how Cosmic became involved.

In recent years, far south Austin has been attracting lots of bars both new and expansions, especially along that stretch of Menchaca Road. Those include South Austin Beer Garden (2019), Armadillo Den (2020), Lustre Pearl South (2021), Lulu’s (2022), and Bodhi’s Hideaway (2023).
