Ivan Ramen, the acclaimed New York City Japanese noodle shop, is now available in Austin for takeout and delivery courtesy of a partnership with Omaha-based company Flagship Restaurant Group. The noodle soup menu is part of the group’s Japanese chain restaurant Blue Sushi Sake Grill, which opened in the Domain at 11410 Century Oaks Terrace, Suite 114 as of April 22.
This national ghost kitchen expansion had been in the works for Ivan Ramen owner Ivan Orkin and Flagship since the fall of 2020. There are already takeout/delivery-only locations of Ivan Ramen in Nebraska, and, in Texas: Fort Worth and Dallas.
Ivan Ramen’s menu features ramen made with rye noodles, in bowls such as the Tokyo shoyu with a dashi/chicken broth paired with glazed pork belly, roasted tomatoes, and soft eggs; the spicy red chili with a dashi/chicken broth and minced pork; and a chicken paitan. There’s a vegan iteration with a soy sauce/vegetable broth. There are sides such as Japanese fried chicken, and steamed pork buns, as well as beer and sake.
Orkin, who is a white Jewish Long Islander, opened Ivan Ramen in Tokyo in 2007 to much success. He expanded with a second restaurant in 2010. His stateside debut took place in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in 2013, followed by the Lower East Side in 2014. He also starred in an episode of Chef’s Table in 2017.
Since then, Orkin shuttered the Tokyo restaurants in 2015, and the Hell’s Kitchen location in November 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We had a fantastic run at Gotham,” he told Eater New York in February 2021, when the closure was official, “and were deeply disappointed to leave our friends and neighbors, but surviving this pandemic has been all about pivoting and we are survivors.” The Lower East Side location remains open.
