A food truck serving Indonesian barbecue, Sate Texas, is coming to the Austin area this summer. The truck will open at the Old Gin Pfood Court in Pflugerville on 310 East Pecan Street starting on Saturday, July 31.
Texas Sate will have sate ayam and sate babi (flame-grilled marinated chicken and marinated pork skewers). There will also be specials like ayam bakar taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) and nasi uduk (rice cooked in coconut milk and spices). Dishes are served with yellow rice, pickled vegetables, and sambal and peanut sauces.
Sate Texas is owned by wife and husband team Tina and Eugene Villarreal. Eugene is an Austin native with extensive experience in the kitchen (his family owned a catering business) while Tina is from Indonesia. The pair decided on Indonesian food because they missed sate from Indonesia.
After a few catering gigs for the Indonesian community, Sate Texas debuted as a pop-up at the 2019 Asian Night Market. The Villarreals began building a trailer in September of 2020 and expect to complete it this summer.
Sate’s first weekend will operate with a limited menu from 5 to 9 p.m. each day or until everything is sold out. Following hours will be announced later.
Update, July 19, 12:21 p.m.: This article, originally published on April 21, has been updated to include the location and opening date of Sate Texas.
