Essential Austin Chinese restaurant and dim sum spot New Fortune is closing next month. Its last day of service in the North Lamar neighborhood on 10901 North Lamar Boulevard will be on Sunday, April 4, for dine-in and takeout services.

New Fortune is closing because of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic. “Unfortunately, due to the struggles we’ve endured during this pandemic,” notes the Instagram post, “we are no longer able to sustain our operations and continue with our lease.”

The New Fortune team is hoping to be able to reopen the restaurant at some point. The restaurant will still entertain catering gigs for events, parties, and weddings, too, booked via email.

During the pandemic, New Fortune had operated for takeout only for a while and then added dine-in services in mid-May.

New Fortune’s sibling restaurant, Jade Restaurant in the Davenport Ranch neighborhood under co-owner co-owner chef William Wong, remains open for takeout service only.

In the before times, New Fortune had been known for its bustling weekend dim sum service, complete with roaming carts full of dishes, and a hot bar, all served in the massive space.

The team behind beloved closed Chinese restaurant T&S opened New Fortune in 2014.
