Cheese-Focused Shop Spread & Co. Opens New Cafe at Outdoor Austin Museum

Rosedale cafe Spread & Co. opened a new location at art museum the Contemporary’s sculpture garden Laguna Gloria in Tarrytown. The new cafe, found at 3809 West 35th Street, opened as of today, Thursday, February 4, with dine-in and takeout services.

Spread Laguna’s shorter menu is similar to the parent restaurant: there’s a short assortment of grazing boards featuring cheeses and charcuterie; sandwiches including a tuna melt; loaded toasts; salads; cups of soups, spreads (pimento cheese, tuna dip); sides (pickles); and pastries. Gluten-free bread is available, and there are options to add eggs, avocado, meats, and smoked fish dip to items. Drinks-wise, there’s coffee and espresso, as well as matcha, lemonade, and iced tea. After the cafe receives its liquor license, it will be able to serve beer and wine.

This second Spread & Co. took over the space that had been occupied by Epicerie’s second location. The also-Rosedale French-Louisiana restaurant debuted in the museum cafe space in October 2018. The museum cafe temporarily closed at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March — while the original Epicerie on Hancock Drive stayed open.

Museum tickets aren’t required to buy takeout food from the cafe; there are curbside pickups available via phone calls. Pickup orders can be placed online or in person through the walk-up window. There are outdoor tables for on-site dining. The museum is open via timed tickets reservations and masks are required. Museum members receive 10 percent discounts. Spread’s Laguna hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and then from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Spread co-owner Rosemary Ewald originally opened the business as a food delivery company with cheese and charcuterie boards in 2016. Her husband Austin joined in early 2019, after stints as the executive chef of Mexican restaurant Grizzelda’s and chef de cuisine at New Texan restaurant Jacoby’s. They opened the physical restaurant later that year in October.
