Gabriela’s Opening in Southpark Meadows
East Seventh’s Gabriela’s Mexican Restaurant is opening a second location in South Austin. The new location will be at the Southpark Meadows shopping center at 9600 South IH-35, and is slated to open spring/summer 2021. Gabriela’s is known for choriqueso, micheladas, and more recently birria. Owner Gabriela Bucio opened the restaurant in 2018, followed by a second downtown Tex-Mex restaurant, Taquero Mucho, last year, and a takeover of coffee shop Revival Coffee in October.
Salt & Time Announces Wine Bar and Beverage Director
Butcher shop and restaurant Salt & Time is adding a wine bar to its forthcoming market at St Elmo Market — with wines curated by new beverage director Erika Widmann. The wine bar will be connected to the market, but will be its own separate brand. Widmann will have a role in the beverage program of each of Salt & Time’s restaurants, a growing list that includes the original Seventh Street restaurant (when it reopens), the new natural wine shop that opened in December, Salt & Time Café downtown, and Butcher’s Burger locations in Austin and Houston. She will also curate the new wine club. Widmann was previously the wine buyer at Whole Foods downtown, and has worked on the production side with California winemaker Michael Cruse.
San Antonio Riverwalk Gains a New Bar and Restaurant
Restauranteur Chris Hill is opening a restaurant and a bar in the historic Witte building at 135 E. Commerce Street. Vietnamese restaurant House of Má will have space on the first and second floors, while a tiki bar Hugman’s Oasis will be on the river level. House of Má, which comes from the team behind Singh’s Vietnamese, will serve Vietnamese homestyle cooking like pho and noodle soups, with some items available on the Hugman’s bar menu. Hill purchased the property in 2014 and undertook a major renovation. The bar and the restaurant will open early this year.
