Local R&B Band Launches Soul Food Delivery Service in Austin

A new Harlem-styled soul food delivery service focusing on chicken and waffles is opening soon in Austin, courtesy of members of local R&B band Sam Houston & BLK Odyssy. The Soul House will begin delivering food on Monday, June 22.

“Harlem-styled soul food represents a time where our culture was celebrated and began to be celebrated by other cultures,” said co-owner Sam Houston, a black New Jersey native who is the lead singer of the band. He was inspired by restaurants like The Wells Supper Club, a New York restaurant lauded for its chicken and waffles from the 1930s through the 1980s, and Los Angeles chicken and waffle institution Roscoe’s.

Through Soul House, Houston wants to bring people together amid the protests supporting black communities and against police brutality. One of Houston’s brothers was killed by police in 2010.

“The motivation behind this idea stemmed from the want to create more inclusion and harmony between gaps in cultures,” Houston explained. “We see nothing better than community sharing the love for soul food and discussing and exploring ways to create an environment where we can celebrate each other for our differences.”

The menu includes fried chicken (which involves a blend of six seasonings, a 12-hour brine, and a hot honey glaze), thin waffles, and sides like mac and cheese, candied yams, corn bread, and garlic green beans. The recipes come from Houston, who also has worked in several kitchens in New York and New Jersey. Check out the full menu below.

Houston partnered with his band members Jay Houston (who is also his brother) and Alejandro Rios for the restaurant. The group plans to release a new video on the first day of delivery service. They’re also looking for a permanent physical location in the city.

Customers can place preorders for delivery on Monday, June 22 via its website or by calling (201) 285-9388. The Soul House will be serve on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Sundays for brunch and dinner.
