Veracruz Closes Original Location
Since South by Southwest is canceled now and favorite taco truck Veracruz All Natural’s original location on East Cesar Chavez doesn’t need to stay open to feed the festival crowds, it is now closed as of Sunday, March 8. This shutter made way for co-owners Reyna and Maritza Vazquez’s new location up on Webberville Road, which is now open. That East Austin location features both taco and juice trucks, which will eventually make way for a full-on restaurant sometime this year.
Boozy Boba Pop-Up
Los Angeles bubble tea shop Labobatory is bringing back its boozy boba pop-up to Austin. It’ll take place at Clarksville restaurant Bar Peached’s basement event space on Wednesday and Thursday, March 11 and 12, just right before South by Southwest. Founder and owner Elton Keung will create concoctions like the Taro X Mezcal, made with taro milk, honey boba, and mezcal; and the Johnny Bobaseed with applejack, honey boba, and apple green tea. It runs from 4 to 10 p.m. The pop-up is traveling to other cities, including Houston. Labobatory’s first Austin pop-up took place in 2017 at Bar Peached’s sibling restaurant Peached Tortilla.
Austin Restaurant’s Wellness Programs
Modern Mexican restaurant Comedor was featured in a New York Time’s piece highlighting the ways restaurants across the country are focusing on mindfully taking care of its staffers. The Austin restaurant organizes a running club and hosts free yoga classes.
South Austin Barbecue Party
Outstanding barbecue and taco truck Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ is throwing an evening barbecue party this weekend. This includes lots of a five-course meal featuring probably lots of smoked meats, desserts (as well as s’mores), beer, wine, games, and concerts. It takes place on Sunday, March 15 from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $125 for adults and $50 for kids between the ages of 13 and 18 years-old.
West 34th Street Restaurant Update
Old West Austin restaurant 34th Street Cafe underwent a renovation recently. The new space features a new wine bar, among other items, all designed by Sparrow Interiors. The new menu from chef Paul Petersen includes chalupas, meatloaf, quail and peach salads, brisket burgers, and risotto.
