After just over a year, essential Austin barbecue truck Micklethwait closed its smoked meats restaurant in Smithville, Micklethwait Market and Grocery, as of today, Thursday, February 27.

The restaurant closed so that Pitmaster Tom Micklethwait and the rest of the staff could “ focus on their Austin businesses,” according to a rep. Those other two trucks in Austin — the original Micklethwait Craft Meats truck on Rosewood and the newer truck Taco Bronco in Mueller — will remain open.

Pitmaster Tom Micklethwait explained how business at the Smithville restaurant had been really slow during the weekdays to Texas Monthly last fall.

It was because of that slow business that Micklethwait decided to open the barbecue taco truck last month at the batch of Mueller spot Batch. That way, the barbecue equipment could be used more That truck serves barbecue-filled tacos like small barbacoa tacos and brisket-cactus-potato hash tacos, as well as barbecue sandwiches, plates, and meats by-the-pound.

Micklethwait opened the Smithville restaurant in February 2019, which featured both barbecue and a market with retail items. The Austin barbecue truck opened in 2012.
