South Austin Coffee and baked goods truck Teal House Bakery is expanding to a storefront on South Congress later this year. The new cafe will be found at 2304 South Congress Avenue (in the former location of New India, which closed in 2018) in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood. It had been pegged to open on Saturday, January 30, but the opening date has been pushed back into sometime next week due to delays.

Teal House is currently known for coffee drinks and excellent baked goods like cinnamon rolls, kolaches, croissants, and pies, including gluten-free varieties. With the new location, owner Lance Phillips plans to expand the current offerings in two phases. The first will include those cinnamon rolls, naturally, plus different cinnamon roll takes such as maple-bacon rolls and bourbon-pecan sticky buns, as well as klobásníky (savory kolaches) and pies (both large and individual versions). Later on will be bread pudding made with cinnamon rolls, cookies, and banana puddings. Also in the works are light lunch options like soups, salads, and sandwiches on bread made in-house.

Phillips started Teal House with his family out of their teal house in 2016. Thus, when looking for a space, he wanted it to feel like home, and Phillips feels they have found that in this building.

The family actually started their search for a storefront location last year, including three months of negotiations with a different South Austin space that ultimately, per Phillips, decided they would only work with a national brand. “There just are not that many great spaces for trucks and trailers,” he elaborated. “We don’t have the space for more prep in our trailer and commissaries cost a lot as well. So brick-and-mortar made the most sense for us.“

The Teal House Bakery trailer opened in 2018, and will continue to serve on East Slaughter Lane when the physical bakery opens.

Update, January 29, 2021, 12:20 p.m.: This article, originally published on February 27, 2020, has been updated to reflect postponement of Teal House’s bakery opening date and menu details.
