That forthcoming Japanese restaurant from giant restaurant group McGuire Moorman Hospitality (MMH), Neighborhood Sushi, will start serving sushi, tempura, and other dishes on 1716 South Congress Avenue in March, as gleaned from several Poached job listings, in South Austin.
The restaurant is taking over the address previously home to Little Barrel and Brown/August & Marcel Wine Bar in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood. Neighborhood Sushi was among the three new restaurants that announced last fall from the growing company. That includes Sammie’s, the Italian restaurant taking over Hut’s Hamburgers, and Favorite’s Pizza, the pizzeria taking over Favorite Liquor & Wine, both on West Sixth.
Neighborhood Sushi is meant to be a casual Japanese restaurant, serving sushi (naturally), as well as tempura, soups, and platters meant for groups, for lunch and dinner. As for drinks, there will be sake, cocktails made with sake, beer, wine, and matcha. It’s probably safe to presume that Neighborhood Sushi will approach Japanese fare in a similar manner to the way sibling spot Elizabeth Street Cafe does with Vietnamese cuisine.
Neighborhood’s space will feature both sushi and sake bars, as well as a semi-private dining room which will take its design cues from the Japanese seating style of horigotatsu, where guests tend to sit on cushions on the floor around a dining table. Elsewhere, there will be booths and banquettes. Currently, the restaurant is hiring for all positions, including the executive chef, front- and back-of-house staffers and a general manager.
MMH currently has a roster of 13 Austin restaurants and one Aspen restaurant. Along with those forthcoming Italian restaurants, the company is also opening casual Mediterranean spot Mockingbird Café and poolside bar and restaurant La Piscina, both in downtown Austin within the Austin Proper, projected to debut in the spring.
Neighborhood Sushi’s South Congress neighbors include very sustainably-minded casual Japanese restaurant Lucky Robot and high-end tiny omakase restaurant Otoko.
