Houston Bar Pops Up in Austin
Essential Houston cocktail bar Anvil Bar & Refuge will mix up drinks for one night only in Austin. It’ll take place at everybody’s favorite bar Nickel City in Central East Austin on Monday, January 13. The theme of the cocktail menu is Tex-Mex, with drinks like avocado margaritas and the Fajita Colada, along with takes on combo plates which will mix classic cocktails together, according to CultureMap Austin. Hours aren’t known yet.
South Austin Asian smokehouse Loro and South Austin brewery Skull Mechanix Brewing teamed up on a new beer. The result is the Smoke N Brew, a bohemian lager made with pit-smoked Czech malts. There’s a party celebrating the new beer at Loro on Thursday, January 16 at 5 p.m. Those who purchase one of the first 500 glasses will receive a special glass. The beer will also be available at other bars and restaurants in the state.
Similarly, downtown brewery Central District Brewing and South Austin brewery Nomadic Beerworks created a new beer with two different variations of their own. The New Kids on the Block is a Texas amber lager, a take on the California Common. The beers will be available at both breweries starting on Saturday, January 12 at noon. During that time, there will be a shuttle between the breweries so that guests can visit and taste both beers.
Culinary Scholarship Applications
Applications for culinary educational scholarships through the Les Dames d’Escoffier’s Austin chapter are now being accepted for 2020. The organization is looking to give away $20,000 and the deadline is Monday, February 3. Specific new categories include culinary students, educator, a la carte stipends, and more. The nonprofit focused on supporting women in the food, beverage, and hospitality industries
Discounted Anniversary Tasting Menus
In honor of fine-dining destination Barley Swine’s fourth anniversary, the Brentwood restaurant is offering discounted tasting menu prices this month. The $65 (typically $95) reservations will be available from Sunday, January 12 through Thursday, January 16.
