After many delays, Austin bakery Quack’s finally opened that long-awaited far south Austin location this week. Captain Quackenbush’s Coffeehouse is now open on 5326 Menchaca Road under limited hours, as confirmed by a staffer.

On deck are Quack’s baked goods — including those cookies and cakes — and coffee. Eventually, the cafe will serve beer, wine, and non-alcoholic cocktails.

As a tribute to the space’s predecessor (Quack’s took over what had been Strange Brew, which closed in 2017 after missed rent payments and bounced paychecks), there is a musical component in the form of a music venue, taking over what had been Strange Brew’s next-door Lounge Side.

Currently, Captain Quackenbush’s hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. These hours will expand at a later date.

The name stems from Quack’s original bakery — Captain Quackenbush’s Intergalactic Espresso and Dessert Company — which owner Art Silver opened on Guadalupe Street in 1983 but closed in 1999.

This is Quack’s third location in Austin, including the 43rd Street bakery and Mueller cake shop. The latter is found where Bribery Bakery used to be on Simond Avenue. Captain Quackenbush’s is the largest out of the three, complete with outdoor space and a window counter for to-go orders.
