The newest Austin location of beloved Texas grocery store H-E-B will bring the chain’s in-house barbecue restaurant True Texas BBQ to the city. The store will open at 715 South Exposition Boulevard in the Lake Austin area starting in 2021.
True Texas BBQ is no ordinary grocery store barbecue. It was named the best barbecue chain in the state by Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn, who praised the scratch-made desserts and sides along with the brisket and smoked turkey. The Lake Austin location will have a full bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and a coffee shop.
H-E-B first started serving barbecue at the Café Mueller restaurant at the Mueller location. Eventually, it expanded with the standalone barbecue restaurant now with ten locations throughout the state, including San Antonio, each overseen by a separate pitmaster. A forthcoming H-E-B on Slaughter Lane will also have an outpost on True Texas BBQ, and will likely open before the Lake Austin location.
Looks-wise, the multi-level store will use Lake Flato Architects, who also designed the Mueller H-E-B, though it will have a slightly different look to match the neighborhood (think: vine-covered walls and limestone).
The Lake Austin store will break ground next month. H-E-B’s future plans include an entirely renovated South Congress shop with a food ball and beer garden, opening in 2022.
Update, 4 p.m.: This article has been updated to reflect that the Slaughter Lane location of H-E-B will also include True Texas BBQ and will likely open first.
