Salt Traders Coastal Cooking, the Round Rock-based seafood restaurant from Texas chef Jack Gilmore, opened its second location this week in South Austin. For now, the 1101 South Mopac Expressway restaurant in Barton Hills is only open for dinner, with lunch service to come at a later date.

Salt Traders’s menu is (naturally) all about seafood. The raw bar features oysters, peel-and-eat Gulf Coast shrimp, crudo, etc. Then there are comfort-leaning dishes like the clam chowder fries, fish tacos, shrimp and lobster rolls, grilled tuna steak, cold weather-perfect cioppino and bouillabaisse, and more. Plus there are non-seafood items like salads, ribeye steak, wood-fired half chickens, and desserts.

The opening of Salt Traders Zilker (as it is referred to) marks Gilmore’s sixth overall restaurant and his closest Central Austin location. He opened his first Austin-area restaurant, Jack Allen’s Kitchen, in Oak Hill in 2009, followed by Round Rock in 2012, 360 in 2015, and West Anderson Lane in 2017. He switched gears by expanding with Salt Traders Coastal Cooking in Round Rock in 2016.
