Pop Star’s Austin Doughnut Visit
Pop star, singer, and songwriter Charli XCX paid a visit to the Austin location of Voodoo Doughnut before her show last night at Emo’s. “Oh my God, it’s so good,” she said while looking at the Sixth Street shop’s revolving doughnut case in her Instagram story. She brought back a box full of doughnuts, including the signature Voodoo Doll doughnut, which is filled with raspberry jelly and topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stick.

Sushi Pop-Up
Sushi mastermind Yoshi Okai of omakase restaurant Otoko is taking over host location South Congress Hotel for a week-long sushi pop-up. He’ll slice and put together a limited menu, to be paired along with cocktails from tiny bar Watertrade. It takes place from Monday, September 30 through Friday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to close, with a kick-off party that first evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Israeli Cookbook Author Comes to Austin
Israeli cookbook author Janna Gur will be feted at a brunch at downtown Southern restaurant Olamaie during the Texas Book Festival in October. Gur is the co-author of just-recently published cookbook Shuk: From Market to Table, the Heart of Israeli Home Cooking. The three-course brunch will feature recipes from said-book cooked by Olamaie’s Michael Fojtasek and his team, as well as cocktails and biscuits. It takes place on Sunday, October 27 at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $125, which includes a signed copy of the cookbook. Co-cookbook author Einat Admony, who is the chef and owner of New York restaurants like Balaboosta, Kish-Kash, and Taim, will appear at the Texas Book Festival’s cooking tent.

Cocktail Contest
Austin distillery Violet Crown Spirits is hosting a cocktail contest benefitting the Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project, called Flor de Muertos. Participants will craft a Day of the Dead-themed cocktail using its Midnight Marigold bitter cordial. Proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit. The deadline for submissions is Monday, October 7, with finalists announced on Monday, October 14. The actual competition will take place on Monday, October 28 at Bar 508.
