New-school shabu-shabu restaurant DipDipDip Tatsu-ya (from the team behind Ramen Tatsu-ya and Kemuri) is actually opening an ice cream shop. DipDipDip Ice Cream will be found at the Crestview restaurant at 7301 Burnet Road starting on Saturday, September 14.
On deck will be ice cream scoops and toppings with a heavy focus in Japanese flavors served in hand-dipped mochiko cones, which are made with the same sweet rice flour used for mochi. There are also undipped cones and cups. Overseeing the ice cream program is owner and chef Tatsu Aikawa.
There’s the Sum Yum Yuzu with black pepper-yuzu-mascarpone ice cream topped with strawberry-black pepper meringues and shiso leaves; the intriguing Shroom of Doom with caramel-chocolate-shiitake mushroom ice cream; the Miso PB&J with miso-peanut butter-jelly ice cream topped with miso croutons, plum jam, and candied peanuts; and the Barney Poo with ube ice cream, a pickled blueberry gel, and cream cheese sauce. Additional toppings include bits of miso kouign-amanns and soy-sauced marshmallows. Scope out the full menu below.
Unique about the ice cream shop is that it’s all self-service ordering via an outdoor kiosk with a pick-up window. People will also be able to use the patio of next-door restaurant Tacodeli after 3 p.m.
DipDipDip Ice Cream’s hours will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and then from noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
DipDipDip Tatsu-ya opened in June. Also under the Tatsu-ya umbrella are those ramen restaurants, Texas-Japanese izakaya Kemuri, and Japanese patio curry bar Domo Alley-Gato. Next up is the South Lamar tiki bar Tiki Tatsu-ya, which is aiming to open sometime in early 2020.
