Austin is getting yet another over-the-top desserts spot with the opening of new food truck Waffle Bot + Freak Shakery on 75 Rainey Street starting on Friday, September 20. The downtown Austin sweets truck is from the team behind South Congress Japanese restaurant Lucky Robot, including owner Adam Weisberg and partner Jay Huang.
Waffle Bot’s menu features eight Belgian waffle flavors and seven overloaded milkshakes (which it refers to as “freakshakes” for some reason), all with pop culture names. There’s the Sir Brunch-a Lot waffle with maple glaze, bacon, strawberries, sprinkles, and cream cheese drizzle. The Super Bowl Sunday Freak Shake is made with Cool Ranch Doritos ice cream (yes) topped with candied bacon and pretzel sticks.
Once Waffle Bot opens, its hours will be from 6 p.m. to midnight Wednesday and Thursday, 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
Weisberg opened Lucky Robot in 2012. The South Congress restaurant had been formerly Zen Japanese Food Fast, which he still owns.
