Tapas Restaurant’s Temporary Closure
South Austin tapas restaurant El Chipiron has been closed for the past several weeks because of maintenance issues. The restaurant’s air conditioner died, according to owner Pablo Gomez, so he’s taking the time to fix that, as well as work on some other repairs and general upkeep. He’s hoping to reopen the South Lamar Boulevard restaurant sometime in the following weeks.
Queso Winners
The annual queso competition Quesoff took place over the weekend at Red River music venue the Mohawk. Winners were Eldorado Cafe for best in show and veggie, Better Half for meaty, home cooks Art’s Kick Ass Queso (from Arturo Reye and Liz Segovia-Reyes) for spicy, and Pink Avocado Catering’s in the wild card category. The event raised enough money to serve 18,592 meals for the Central Texas Food Bank.
Owners and Female Pitmasters of La Barbecue
La Barbecue co-owners LeAnn Mueller and Ali Clem talked to Austin Monthly about running their popular barbecue spot as gay women in an industry full of usually male pitmasters. “I’m going to prove that women can do barbecue,” Mueller told the publication.
Barbecue Day-Off
Lauded Lexington barbecue restaurant Snow’s BBQ will be closed on Saturday, August 3. It’ll be back open the following week on Saturday, August 10.
Movie Theater/Restaurant Acquisition
Movie theater and restaurant chain Moviehouse & Eatery was acquired by corporate movie theater chain Cinépolis. The Austin-based mini-movie theater chain runs five Texas locations, with two in the city.
