East Austin’s Attabar Shutters After Sudden Death of Owner

East Austin Bar Closure
Attabar, the east side bar on 1300 East 6th Street, is now also closed after the sudden death of owner Ian R. Weightman in mid-June. He had also ran downtown bar Moonfire Lounge, which closed in June as well. Attabar’s shutter happened as of sometime in early July. The bar, which opened in March 2018, took over the space formerly occupied by the Cold War-inspired burger and hot dog restaurant Sputnik, which closed in February 2017.

San Antonio Chef Leaves
Brooke Smith, the chef of lauded San Antonio bar the Esquire Tavern, is leaving the Riverwalk destination. She had worked at the restaurant for eight years. Now Esquire is looking for a new executive chef.

Future Plans for Red River Pizzeria
There is a new hotel plan in the works, projected to development the land where Red River restaurant and pizzeria Brick Oven resides. Austin-based real estate company Hesperus Group, LLC wants to open a luxury hotel in the space.

Austin Kid Competes in Baking Show
11-year-old Austinite Dharma Sabapathy is competing in the next season of Food Network television show Kids Baking Championship. The show is hosted by actress and celebrity cookbook author Valerie Bertinelli and pastry chef and Ace of Cakes star Duff Goldman. The season begins on Monday, August 5 at 8 p.m.

Austin Bartender Competes
North Loop bar Drink.Well bartender Natalie Mauser-Carter is competing in a cocktail competition hosted by liqueur company Amaro Montenegro at booze conference Tales of the Cocktail today, Friday, July 19. She and her fellow competitors will have to make the best cocktail involving the amaro.
