A new bakery, cafe, and home goods store, Maaribu, is opening near campus sometime in 2020. The shop will be located in a long-shuttered building at 3402 Guadalupe Street.
Few details are available about the shop, which is moving into a building that was previously a pawn shop. It also seems likely the bakery will be gluten-free, as the design firm developing Maaribu’s branding, Stav, included the phrase “gluten-free-bakery-austin” in its URL for the work. The branding features a donkey in front of either the sun or the moon. The word maaribu is Swahili for “temptation,” although it’s unclear if that is the inspiration for the restaurant.
The shop promises “unique delights for all senses” per its website, like recently opened Rock Rose spot Wonder Bar and shuttered downtown cocktail bar Academia. It also seems along the lines of interior-design-cum-bar Jules Design Bar at the Hill Country Galleria or Aviary’s original concept, which was a furniture store and wine bar.
Maaribu appears to be owned by Serene and Chris Warren. Eater has reached out for information and will update this space if needed.
