South Congress has a new coffee shop and bar with the opening of Velouria on 3801 South Congress Avenue. The new spot is courtesy of co-owners Tim and Sara Lupa, who own East Sixth bar the Brixton and East Cesar Chavez bar Drinks Lounge. It’s found in the former Stompin Grounds Lounge space within the Davis SoCo apartment building.

Velouria is meant to serve as a neighborhood bar, according to Tim Lupa. “We’re excited to venture south to continue serving the community with straightfoward, classic drinks in a space that we hope can feel like another ‘home base’ bar for the neighborhood,” he said in a statement.

The coffee menu will include pour overs, espresso, and cold brew, all made with Austin Roasting Company. Daytime food includes Crema Bakery pastries, breakfast tacos, sandwiches like chicken salad on croissants and avocado BLTs, salads, and cheese boards.

Then, the evening menu will feature classic cocktails (Negronis, Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Bee’s Knees) and frozen drinks (espresso martinis, Mai Tais). The nighttime food menu will feature bar snacks, and cheese/charcuterie boards.

Joining the team is general manager Kelon Bryant, who worked at restaurants and bars like Justine’s, Eberly, Continental Club, and Loro.

The name of the bar stems from a song by the Pixies. For now, Velouria’s hours are 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., and it will extend its hours to 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily starting on Sunday, April 21.
