Barbecue Show
That digital documentary series from nonprofit Texas Beef Council’s consumer brand Beef Loving Texas, BBQuest, is now available on Hulu, and yes, there are plenty of Austin barbecue joints.
Bourbon Bartenders Contest
Texas distillery Garrison Brothers is hosting a Texas bartender competition, and, after its first contest, it selected the semifinalists, which includes Austin’s Andrew Grenz of downtown hotel Fairmont, Lennie Boyle of all-day cafe Better Half, Priscilla Aragon of South Austin hotel South Congress Hotel, Terence Robson of hidden bar Here Nor There, and Caer Maiko Ferguson of downtown cocktail bar Roosevelt Room. They’ll compete against each other in an Austin-only semifinalist round on Thursday, April 8, and the winner will enter the finals on Thursday, May 2. The winner will receive $10,000.
Growing Food
Actress Zooey Deschanel and husband Jacob Pechenik started a new Austin-based company to encourage people to grow their own food through hydroponic gardens. Lettuce Grow is customizable to the degree of the person’s space (small/large, dark/lots of sun, available of outdoor plots) and what they ultimately want to grow and cook. It will launch in a month.
