A new sports bar is now open in South Austin, taking over what had been gastropub Porter Ale House. Oak Sports Bar & Grill opened in early February on 3715 South 1st Street in the Dawson neighborhood within the Three Apartments building.
Oak appears to function like any other sports bar. The menu — loaded with sports puns like “grand slam” (onion rings, mozzarella sticks, fried pickles, and eggrolls) — features chicken wings, burgers, truffle fries, salads, etc.. For beverages, expect draft beers, mixed drinks, and wine. There are plentiful televisions above the bar.
Gastropub Porter Ale House, which opened by owners Trevor Lane, Neil Joiner, and Joe Bixel in 2014, closed suddenly in July 2017. Joiner opened his own German food truck, The Black Forest, parked at Live Oak Brewing Company that year.
Oak owner Jey Ditta also manages West Sixth Street club Lux. The bar is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight.
