Central East Austin Chinese restaurant Old Thousand is taking over sandwich restaurant Noble Sandwich Co.’s now-vacated address on 4805 Burnet Road in Brentwood. This second Old Thousand is expected to open sometime before the end of 2019.
Old Thousand’s Burnet Road restaurant will work as a counter-service space, making it comparatively more casual than its original East 11th Street location, which does table-service and take-out orders for dinner and weekend dim sum. Expect a similar menu with fried rice with brisket or crab, noodle dishes like the xiao mian, dumplings, fried chicken with Sichuan spices, ribs, pork belly, and more.
Noble Sandwich shuttered its last remaining location last month, along with an auxiliary location of Spun Ice Cream. However, Noble co-owners and chefs John Bates and Brandon Martinez are looking to reopen the shop somewhere in the suburbs. They’re still operating the catering branch of Noble, as well as opening a location in the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Bates and Martinez closed the original Noble Sandwich Co. restaurant on 620 in February, turning it into its now-critically acclaimed barbecue restaurant Interstellar BBQ.
Behind Old Thousand is owner Ben Cachila, executive chef Jeff Brown, and sous chef Rhys Davis. The restaurant opened in December 2016 under the SMGB Hospitality group. Cachila is also involved with downtown Pacific-Asian restaurant She’s Not Here and western downtown pizzeria 40 North.
