East Side Mexican restaurant Gabriela’s Downtown is opening a new taqueria, Taquero Mucho, in the former digs of pizza spot Frank & Angie’s. The restaurant team leased the space at 508 West Avenue under the name Gabriela’s 2.0, as originally reported in August by Austin Business Journal. It will open starting tomorrow, Thursday, January 30, with limited service.

Little information is available about Taquero Mucho, but it will likely serve tacos. A permit is pending for a mixed beverage permit, which means a full bar (and the essential taco accompaniment: margaritas).

Gabriela’s opened in February 2018, with a menu of tacos, tortas, and brunch dishes like chilaquiles and migas served on its expansive patio. It’s owned by siblings Gabriela and Arturo Bucio, who used Michoacán family recipes to create the dishes.

Austin institution Frank & Angie’s occupied West Avenue space for over 20 years before it closed in November 2018 due to rising costs. Co-owners Mike and Kim Hutchinson are also closing their next-door restaurant Hut’s Hamburgers last October, but the longtime spot’s name and menu will live on at the Austin airport.
