Lizzo
Superstar singer Lizzo is playing ACL again for the second time this month, (though she should be a headliner, to be honest), and nearby Tex-Mex restaurant El Arroyo is trying to catch her attention. Its ever-quippy sign offered free tacos to Lizzo (“Free Tacos If Your Name Is Lizzo”) during the first weekend of the festival. She replied on Instagram: “Yes!!! PLEASE” That sign was brought up during an interview on the Billy the Kid Show on 96.7 KISS FM. Her response to the hosts? “I’m gonna have to go to El Arroyo,” as KVUE reported, “Because I might need some tacos.” Will she show up? Before or after her expected jam-packed set?
Cookie Opening Delay
The opening of national chain Insomnia Cookies’s first Austin location is being delayed because of electrical issues, as reported by The Daily Texan.
Breast Cancer Awareness Specials
South Congress hotel restaurant Cafe No Se is donating one dollar of every avocado toast dish (with a pink egg) sold in the month of October to the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas. Likewise, boozy East Austin ice cream shop Prohibition Creamery is donating 10 percent of the prickly pear mezcal sorbet and slushie to the Susan G Komen of Greater Central & East Texas from Tuesday, October 15 through Friday, October 18.
Book Drive
Holly restaurant Pitchfork Pretty is hosting a book drive throughout the month, benefitting Bookspring Austin. For groups who donate at least one book, the restaurant will offer a 10 percent discount per table. The restaurant also made a special cocktail for the book, the Slaughterhouse 512, made with Tequila 512. $2 of every cocktail sold will also be donated to the Austin Public Library during the month.
Uchi Patio Yakitori
South Lamar Japanese restaurant Uchi will serve up special yakitori bites on its patio every Friday in October from 5 to 7 p.m. This includes items like pork jowl served with an apple-cheddar chawanmushi, lobster with XO mayonnaise, and figs with spicy honey.
More Poke
There’s a new poke place up in Highland: Fish & Rice Poke Bar is celebrating its opening (though it opened two months ago) at 6719 North Lamar Boulevard. There will be dollar Dole Whips (with purchase of a bowl) and free sparkling sake all day on Saturday, October 12.
Celebrity Karaoke
Actor Alison Brie hit up Austin sometime recently, and during her trip, she sang her heart out at South Congress karaoke bar Ego’s Lounge.
