Austin is losing another pizzeria this summer: Hoeks Death Metal Pizza, the longtime Sixth Street pizzeria known for slices and metal music, is closing. Its last day will be on Sunday, June 24.
Hoeks will celebrate its last day at 511 East 6th Street that Sunday with a party, co-hosted by next-door neighbors Dirty Dog Bar (which is celebrating its anniversary that evening) and Coyote Ugly Saloon.
The closing party Facebook event page promises that Hoeks “will be back,” even though there are no set plans at the moment. “Good pizza always finds a way.”
Hoeks opened in 1993 right next door to the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz theater, but moved to its 511 East 6th Street home. It boasts of being a “pizza metal kitchen.” The menu consists of small or giant pizza pies, as well as pizza by-the-slice, during the late night hours. The pizzeria also operates a pizza trailer, the Hoeks Death Metal trailer, for events, but there is no word on the food truck’s future.
In related pizza shutter news, old-time campus spot Conans Pizza Central is closing in July.
