Along with comic books and graphic novels, Hops & Heroes Comics new South Lamar shop now offers beer and wine, as well as food from vegetarian restaurant Mr. Natural. The nonprofit comic book store (the only in Austin) on 2055 South Lamar Boulevard recently received its beer and wine permit in May.

“We decided to include beer and wine because it was a first,” said Hops’ executive director Scott Stewart, “but also because beer and comics are the original dynamic duo (sorry, Batman and Robin).”

This means familiar local names like Austin Beerworks and Real Ale Brewing. The menu will add national breweries and wineries in the near future.

Then there‘s Hops‘ original downtown location on 314 1/2 Congress Avenue, within the Austin Toy Museum, which is in the process of receiving its beer and wine license. Stewart predicts they will be able to serve booze sometime in late July.

As for the food, Hops & Heroes features Mr. Natural’s tacos along with sides like rice and beans, nopalitos, and potatoes au gratin.

Hops & Heroes’ proceeds go towards two Comics for College and Comics for Kids. The stores are run by staffers, volunteers, and Goodwill interns.

Both locations of Hops & Heroes are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and then from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.
