Popular Taiwanese chain 85C Bakery Cafe is making its way into Austin for the first time with not one, but two locations. The first will be found in Highland at 6929 Airport Boulevard and the second in Lakeline at 11301 Lakeline Boulevard. There are no projected opening dates as of yet.
85C is nicknamed the “Starbucks of Taiwan.” It’s especially known for its soft brioche, along with sweet and savory bread ranging from Taiwanese to Japanese to European, cakes, and other such desserts. For drinks, there are tea, boba teas, smoothies, and coffee. 85c is particularly known for its iced sea salt coffees and teas too.
85C’s American stores often debut to long, long lines, as seen in Houston and Seattle. The first Houston location opened with a big hoopla involving brioche stuffed toys, lion dancers, speeches, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony
Owner/founder Wu Cheng-Hsueh opened the first 85C Bakery in Taipei, Taiwan in 2003, and the first American location opened in 2008 in Irvine, California. There are currently over 1,000 bakeries across the world. The name is because the bakery chain believes that 85 degrees is the perfect coffee temperature.
The Airport Boulevard location is also home to Kula Revolving Sushi Bar and 99 Ranch Market.
