Local sandwich shop Austin Daily Press finally set the opening date for its second location on 4620 East Cesar Chavez Street in Govalle: Saturday, May 5 (which happens to be Cinco de Mayo). The new restaurant will also become home to Bellows Bakery, run by Austin Daily Press’ head baker Rachel Bach.
Under chef Reed Faitak, the new fast-casual restaurant focuses on tortas with ingredients like fried shrimp and carne asada. Then there are shareable plates that take its cues from Tex-Mex and Gulf Coast roots, like fried green tomatoes, fried Gulf oysters, grilled octopus, and duck confit. The restaurant will also serve updated versions of its classic sandwiches, like the lemongrass beef The Lucy and roasted chicken Pineapple Express.
Bellows Bakery will bake up Austin Daily Press’ Telera rolls for the tortas, along with pastries, baked goods, and desserts. Bach operates Bellows as a stall at the Pedernales Farmers’ Market at Pizzeria Sorellina in Spicewood.
For drinks, there will be wine, draft beer, and coffee. The space includes indoor bar seating and a large patio, all with shipping container details.
Co-owners Dustin Knef and Chase Rushing opened Austin Daily Press as a trailer in 2011. It transitioned into the brick-and-mortar on East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard sometime in 2013.
Austin Daily Press East Cesar Chavez will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight Friday, 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
