South Austin restaurant Thai Fresh is jumping across the river to open a vegan ice cream shop, Gati, in Holly. The coconut milk-based frozen sweets store is taking over the space where taco spot Porfirio’s was located at 1512 Holly Street off East Cesar Chavez, set to open sometime in the fall.
Gati’s will feature over 40 coconut milk-based ice cream flavors, like golden milk (turmeric), lemon poppy seed, Thai basil, toasted black sesame seeds, etc. The shop even teased ice creams scoops served with sticky rice on gluten-free hot dog buns. There will be gluten-free cones, ice cream sandwiches, affogato, and other like-desserts. The ice creams will be packaged for to-go orders and retail.
The shop will also serve gluten-free baked goods and a small savory Asian food menu, with vegetarian-friendly dishes like salads, ices, curries, pastas, and grains. For drinks, there will be a full coffee bar and house-made sodas.
“We feel that it is time to give our amazing ice cream its new home and a new name,” owner Jam Santichat told Eater. She has already been making coconut milk ice cream at Thai Fresh since it’s already a base in the Southeast Asian country’s cuisine.
Santichat opened Thai Fresh with her husband Bruce Barnes in August 2008. Porfirio’s closed in last fall after 32 years of service.
