The ever-changing Lamar Union welcomes a new restaurant today with the opening of Asian spot Mandala Kitchen & Bar today, Friday, March 9 at 5 p.m. The address places it in the heart of South by Southwest traffic from the Alamo Drafthouse, which serves as a major theater hub for the film portion of the conference.
Chef/owner Kieu Pham will focus on Vietnamese and Thai specialties. Dishes will include crispy rice pies topped with shredded pork, dehydrated shrimp, and white truffle oil; seafood noodle salad, and the Viet-Cajun tribute with crawfish.
For Mandala’s first day, it will offer 20 percent off to dine-in orders who mention the Facebook event. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then 5 to 10 p.m. daily.
Lamar Union’s been going through a lot of changes lately. Most recently, higher-end restaurant Vox Table suddenly closed on Valentine’s Day. Mandala actually took over the former space that belonged to Vox Table’s upscale Mexican restaurant El Burro (which shuttered last summer). Other openings in the mixed-use development include casual seafood and Texas restaurant and bar TLC, Japanese restaurant Soto (which took over Cantine’s old space), and the Alamo Drafthouse flagship theater.
