After less than two years, South Lamar’s Venezia Italian Gelato has shuttered its store at 1701 South Lamar. The Facebook page and website have been taken down, and the Instagram and Twitter pages are inactive.

Venezia Italian Gelato opened in April 2016 from owners and native Italians Nicola and Alice Morella. The shop was known for its gelato “donuts,” and also featured numerous flavors of gelato (including milk-free sorbettos) as well as other desserts like tiramisu and traditional coffee drinks.

Likely, the cafe featured stiff gelato competition, with newcomers like The Tasty Spoon and Dolce Neve well as a location of local favorite Lick Ice Creams nearby. New popsicle specialists like Steel City Pops and forthcoming Popbar probably didn’t help either. Luckily, there are still plenty of options for frozen treats in Austin.

No word on what will become of the space or future plans for the gelato makers. Watch this space for updates.
