Downtown Austin pizzeria Frank & Angie’s is closing, and its last day of service will be on Saturday, November 17 on 508 West Avenue.
“The difficult decision to close was reached due to a combination of factors,” explained owners Mike and Kim Hutchinson in a statement released to Eater. “General affordability — or lack thereof — for independent businesses in Austin’s booming Central Business District coupled with high taxes were certainly considerations.” They also noted that the restaurant has been busier since they announced the impending shutter of the restaurant in August. Read the full statement below.
The shuttering of Frank & Angie’s doesn’t affect the Hutchinsons’ other nearby restaurant, Hut’s Hamburgers, which originally opened in 1939 and they purchased it in 1981.
Owners Mike and Kim Hutchinson opened the Sicilian-American restaurant 23 years ago in 1995, with a huge focus on Sicilian-American dishes. The array includes pizza (like giant 18-inch pies), pastas, sandwiches, and desserts.
Frank & Angie’s Shutter Announcement
Frank & Angie’s is lucky to have enjoyed loyal support from our Austin neighbors since we opened in 1995. We worked hard to keep Frank & Angie’s a simple, comfortable restaurant that celebrates a love of family, food and coming together over a good meal. We’ve been honored by the loyal patronage of the Austin community. But the time has come to close the doors. Our last day of operation will be November 17, 2018. The difficult decision to close was reached due to a combination of factors. General affordability — or lack thereof — for independent businesses in Austin’s booming Central Business District coupled with high taxes were certainly considerations. However, after having run businesses for most of our lives, it’s just the right time for us.
Our staff has become part of our extended family, and we will miss the pleasure of working with them as this chapter closes. We sincerely cannot thank our incredible employees enough. Many have honored us with years of dedicated service including our bookkeeper, Ann Ferrell, floor and office manager, Laurie Womble, and evening GM, Eddie Guerrero, who have all been with us since day one. We also want to thank Josh Barta, who rounds out our management team. Our servers — Eva, Razel, Dan, Jodi, Becca, Marshall, Sheen, and Ely — and kitchen crew have been outstanding in maintaining both consistency and a pleasant dining experience that Austinites have come to enjoy. We can’t thank them enough for representing Frank & Angie’s so well. Last but not least we need to thank our counter/delivery staff, J.D., Saul, and Owen.
A special thanks to our great friends and partners, Chuck and Jan Gist, whose help was instrumental in the success of Frank & Angie’s (and Hut’s Hamburgers). Another special thanks to my mom, Angie — whose recipes and love of family was our inspiration for Frank & Angie’s. We also can’t forget to recognize our other namesake, “The Chairman of the Board” Frank Sinatra. To our loyal customers, we offer endless gratitude for your patronage. We have gotten to know a lot of you over the years, and we hope for the chance to thank you personally in the coming days.
We invite you all to come in and enjoy your favorite Frank & Angie’s meals — or even enjoy one for the first time. Please be patient as we have been a bit busier than usual since news of the imminent closing was released. As always, we will strive to give you the quality service and food that you have come to expect from our family at Frank & Angie’s.
Sincerely,
Mike and Kim Hutchinson
