Austin’s H Mart Caught on Fire

H Mart’s Austin location up in Lakeline caught on fire early this morning, which was contained to the meat section of the Korean supermarket. The fire was put out quickly, but there was a lot of smoke in the building. The cause of the fire isn’t known yet either. Whether H Mart will be able to open for the day is still being determined by the Health Department.

— A UT Austin student started a halal meat delivery service for students. Maaz Syed takes orders, charges the full order amount plus a delivery fee to the students, and then picks up the meats from his family’s store World Food and Halal Meat Market, on 9616 North Lamar Boulevard in North Austin.

— The space that used to house longtime Italian restaurant Carmelo’s on East 5th Street — the restaurant closed in June — is being turned into a high-rise office building courtesy of World Class Capital Group, LLC.

— Even though there is still no selected food vendor for Zilker Park after the shutter of Zilker Cafe in 2016, there is a new rendering for the future concessions space designed with CasaBella Architects. The beloved shuttered campus burger joint Players was going to take over the space on 2015, but that was nixed because of needed renovations to the building. The construction is expected to be finished in fall 2019.

— Musician Tameca Jones shared her favorite Austin spots with National Geographic, which includes Jo’s Coffee for caffeine, 24 Diner for brunch (her go-to dish is the chicken and waffles “which are cooked to golden, 24-karat perfection”), Baton Creole for Cajun food, and more.

— Shiner, Texas-based brewery Spoetzl (which brews Shiner) donated $50,000 towards nonprofits offering Hurricane Michael relief in Florida and Georgia after the storm hit the region last week. The donations were split between two food banks: Feeding the Gulf Coast of Florida and Second Harvest of South Georgia.
