North Loop neighborhood bar Workhorse Bar’s takeover of north campus dive bar Nasty’s is complete. The new bar, Back Lot, is now open, making its debut at the end of 2017.
Back Lot remains true to Nasty’s spirit — it’s still a neighborhood friendly bar, just with a slightly updated feel. For drinks, there are beers in draft, cans, and bottles, featuring local breweries like Austin Beerworks, Thirsty Planet Brewing Company, and Blue Owl Brewery, as well as cocktails and wine. The pool table and dart boards remain, but now there are decorative license plates lining the walls. Renovations also revealed additional windows, which brighten up the space.
Back Lot is also home to new pastrami truck, Otherside Deli, which opened in November 2017. The menu features meaty sandwiches, plus the vegetarian-friendly mushroom take on pastrami, along with heartier sides like chicken liver toasts, pastrami-spiced fries, and beer cheese. It serves food from 11 a.m. to midnight daily.
Nasty’s original owner Jack Bloom sold the bar to Workhorse owners Steve Ettle and Brent Broyles in September 2017. Ettle and Broyles opened Workhorse in 2012. Nasty’s opened in 1985 and was known for its hip-hop nights on Mondays with DJ Mel.
Back Lot is open from 3 p.m. to midnight Monday through Wednesday and until 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. The hours are subject to expanding depending on business.
