South Austin is getting another boutique hotel courtesy of Chicago’s The Guesthouse Hotel. The hotel will take over the long-shuttered Taste of China at 2510 South Congress Avenue. It’s currently in the permit approval process, expected to open in early 2019.
The unnamed as of now hotel will include a cafe serving coffee, tea, snacks, and prepared foods from local restaurants. Plus there will be 78 suites and studios and a pool with cabanas.
The hotel is being designed by local firm Levy Architects, overseen by developer David Krug, who also manages the Chicago hotel. Krug tells Eater Austin the decision not to have a restaurant was intentional as the suites come with kitchenettes or full kitchens with optional grocery delivery, though room service will also be available through local restaurants.
However, all might not be smooth sailing for the project. The lot is next to a church, and CultureMap notes that a representative expressed concerns that the noise level would disturb the area. Real estate blog Towers also points out that the long, narrow lot is an odd choice for the hotel.
This project joins a number of hospitality ventures coming to the area, including the members only Soho House and Carpenter Hotel as well as new culinary forays for the Austin Motel.
