Vegan gluten-free bakery Zucchini Kill opened a brick and mortar on 53rd Street, after years of selling sweets at diner Counter Culture. The yard of the new location, Possum Park, currently houses Bananarchy (which has vegan options) and totally vegan compatriot food trucks Bistro Vonish, The Great Y’all.

The bakery is best known for its Twinkies, but offer a host of other sweets like cookies, cupcakes, sweet breads, and doughnuts. The store will also have drinks, groceries, and locally made, handcrafted art. Zucchini will continue to sell the baked goods at Buzz Mill, and at Counter Culture on Fridays.

Zucchini Kill, which is a play on riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, is owned by a trio of punk rock ladies: Cece Loessin, MT Gibbs, and Jess Freda of Red Rabbit Cooperative Bakery (which closed in 2015). Freda and Loessin used to be in a band together. Because they want to support other bands, offer 10 percent off the baked goods to bands traveling through the city.

To commemorate its debut, Zucchini Kill is holding a grand opening party on Saturday, September 16, with free beer, a cupcake-eating contest, and more, with proceeds benefitting Austin Pets Alive.
