Blackbird Bakery, a bastion of gluten-free baked goods, is now closed. Owner Karen Morgan did not renew the Lakeway bakery’s lease because she wants to focus on her line of gluten-free flour blend products. Its last day was on Saturday, August 26.

Morgan founded Blackbird in 2008 as a company producing prepackaged gluten-free flour blends for bread, pizza, cookies, doughnuts, crusts, and more. Along with baking, she is also a cookbook author with two books: The Every Day Art of Gluten-Free as well as Blackbird Bakery Gluten-Free.

She followed the company with the brick and mortar bakery on Lohmans Spur in 2015. The gluten-free bakery menu spanned pop tarts, cookies, cakes, breads, danishes, quiche, cakes, doughnuts, and other pastries. It also baked up custom cakes and wholesale goods.

Now gluten-free seekers will have to head to Wild Wood Bakehouse for baked goods, as well as other Austin restaurants with similar offerings like Picnik and Thai Fresh. Wildwood is also opening a gluten-free restaurant on East 7th Street. It’s taking over the shuttered Silo on 7th for the spot.
