Austin Monthly’s Sarah Thurmond visited Kula Revolving Sushi Bar, famous for its conveyor-belt delivery and iPad ordering system. She admitted the visit was more about the experience than the food, which she described as “mesmerizing” and a friend said felt like "a video game.” Although she enjoyed her meal, she won’t necessarily be returning:
While the food itself is fresh, it’s also pretty basic [...] We enjoyed the crunchy roll with tempura shrimp, eel sauce, crab, avocado, sesame seed, and panko crumbs; and the crispy rice with crab mayo. Kula is worth a visit — it just won’t leave you craving more.
Another Austin Monthly writer, Kimya Kavehkar, found her new favorite Austin sandwich shop with Biderman’s Deli. The Jewish-style deli didn’t quite live up to the standards of dearly departed Romanouskas Deli from Micklethwait Craft Meats, but she praised the variety of bagels and toppings. The real treat, though, were the sandwiches:
[T]he crème de la crème of the menu is the Far West Club. It’s my favorite sandwich in town, and it’s as big as your face, piled high with turkey, ham, Swiss cheese, white cheddar, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and mayo, all on toasty sourdough bread from New World Bakery.
To Kavehkar, Biderman’s signaled the return of comfort food in Austin with “[s]imple, unpretentious, [...] family-friendly restaurants.”
THE BLOGS — The Austinot touted the gumbo, po’boys, and atmosphere at Swamp Daddy’s Ra-gin Ka-jun, Dine with Shayda added to the praise for Pitchfork Pretty, calling out the coconut crepe cake (see what others are saying).
