Toy Joy, the quirky toy shop in downtown Austin, is expanding with a new candy and ice cream shop on 2nd Street, with the help of vegan ice cream parlor Sweet Ritual. Yummi Joy is taking over next-door coffee shop Cafe Ruckus, which closed over the weekend. It’s expected to open in August.

Yummi Joy will feature global bulk and packaged candies, chocolate, and fudge. As for beverages, there will be classic sodas, coffee, and hot chocolate. Sweet Ritual will offer 12 different non-dairy frozen sweet flavors through a walk-up window that will be open late.

This new shop reunites Toy Joy and Sweet Ritual. The ice cream shop co-founder Amelia Raley made and served ice cream at Toy Joy’s original location on the Drag nine years ago. She branched out to focus on vegan ice cream with Sweet Ritual with co-founder Valerie Ward in 2011.

Vivian Saboda will run the candy shop as its food and beverage manager. She previously worked for Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and Kilwins Confectionary.

Toy Joy first opened 30 years ago on the Drag and moved to its downtown location in 2013. Sweet Ritual opened in 2011, and relocated into a bigger shop on Airport Boulevard in Hyde Park in 2016. When Yummi Joy opens, the ice cream shop will stay open.

Cafe Ruckus isn’t gone forever: co-owners Rori Gallagher and Keith Ruckus are looking to continue their high tea series in a new venue.
