South Austin’s new Spanish tapas restaurant, El Chipiron, makes its South Lamar debut this week starting on Friday, June 23. With limited hours, the restaurant will serve a prix fixe menu for now. Executive chef and owner Pablo Gómez Tollar hails from Spain.

Once El Chipiron fully opens, the restaurant, which is Spanish for “baby octopus,” will serve tapas and pinchos for dinner and brunch. This means papas arrugás (salty boiled potatoes with mojo sauce), stuffed potatoes with iberico, confit cod, arroz con leche, and more. For drinks, there’s an emphasis on gin and tonics, wine, and beer.

El Chipiron will be found within Cielo apartment building. Aside from serving food, the restaurant will host Spain-centric cooking and cocktail classes, beer and cheese tastings, and other types of activities.

At the beginning, El Chipiron’s limited are from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 23; 5 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 24; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Sunday brunch on Sunday, June 25; 5 to 10 p.m. Monday, June 26 through Wednesday, June 28; 7 to 10 p.m. on Thursday to Friday, June 29 to 30. The full opening will happen on Saturday, July 1.
