Sam Hellman-Mass, one of the founding partners of Barley Swine and Odd Duck, is venturing on his own with a new restaurant in the East Side. Suerte will focus on Mexican cooking techniques and what Hellman-Mass describes as “Mexican flavors.” It’s projected to open by the end of the year.
Suerte will take over the long-shuttered Tex-Mex restaurant Dario's on East 6th Street, right next door to cocktail bar Whisler’s. Hellman-Mass actually purchased the building, which will be renovated for the new restaurant.
For research purposes, Hellman-Mass visited New York, San Francisco, Mexico City, the Yucatan, and other regions in the search for masa.
While Hellman-Mass remains a partner at Barley Swine and Odd Duck, he is no longer a chef at either Bryce Gilmore restaurant. He previously worked at the Montagna Restaurant at the Little Nell Hotel in Aspen, where he met Bryce Gilmore and joined his Austin restaurants.
