Kinda Tropical is part-convenience store, part-restaurant, and part-bar, all in one handy location in Govalle. Like the same suggests, the shop and eatery offers up breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tropical-leanings. Take the cinnamon toast with coconut sugar, savory patties, yucca fries, and jerk chicken.

The lunch and dinner options include a variety of grilled meats and vegetables, from goat and chicken, tofu and sweet potato, to smelt fish and octopus. Plus there are rotating ramen and curries of the day, rice bowls, and kimchi-laden egg sandwiches. It also comes armed with a strong selection of beers, wine, and sake.

Kinda’s shop aspect includes the usual array expected from a market: dry goods, fresh fruit, beers and drinks, Asian snacks (think Pocky and Haribo gummies), etc. The space is decked out with intricate murals inside and out, as well as a detailed window display with a fake snake. For seating, there’s the bar and the expansive outdoor patio.

The bodega took over the A-1 Food Mart East 7th Street and opened to the public in April. Similar establishments around Austin include Quickie Pickie, Dia’s Market, Friends & Neighbors, among others. Unfortunately, Holly’s New Orleans-inspired spot Mr. Mc’s is temporarily closed for now and there is no word on what its return will entail.

Kinda Tropical’s hours are from 8 a.m. to midnight on Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, and then from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
