Stonehouse Coffee & Bar debuts today, Monday, March 27, at 1105 South Lamar Boulevard reviving the previously neglected historical Dawson Stone House. The cafe will dish out a menu of coffee, tea, craft beer, pastries, gelato, and more. It will also serve as a new location for grilled cheese truck Burro Cheese Kitchen, which will open later.
Update, April 10: Burro Cheese Kitchen’s second trailer is now open at Stonehouse. It'll serve up grilled cheese sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
The cafe offers Cuvee coffee, Mighty Leaf teas, wine, seven craft beers on tap, and Cuvee Black and Blue cold brew coffees on nitrogen tap. The cafe’s pastries are delivered daily from Austin favorite Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery, and it sources its six gelato flavors from Austin Gelato Company.

The historic South Lamar building was built in 1900 by two sisters, Mary and Nannie Dawson, and received state landmark status in 1974. The building was most recently a LoanStar Title Loans. The interior has now been updated by local design firm Michael Hsu Office of Architecture. Storehouse’s exterior features a large front deck under a canopy of oaks trees.
Burro Cheese Kitchen will eventually open on-site and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Its opening date is to be announced. Notably, the grilled cheese truck is opening up nearly across the street from similar-sounding El Burro restaurant, which was previously the subject of a cease and desist from the food truck. The conflict — which involved a person dressed in a donkey head costume — eventually led Burro Cheese Kitchen to file a temporary restraining order against the Mexican restaurant. That has since been dropped.
Stonehouse is overseen by FBR Management, the group behind Stonehouse neighbor Gibson Street Bar, as well as Lala’s Little Nugget, Rattle Inn, Mean Eyed Cat, among others.
The coffee shop and bar is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
