Feel at Home With Philip Speer’s New Neighborhood Diner Bonhomie

Opening this week

Nadia Chaudhury is the editor of Eater Austin covering food and pop culture, as well as a photographer, writer, and frequent panel moderator and podcast guest.

One of Austin’s most anticipated restaurant openings of 2017 is finally here. Bonhomie, the French bistro and American diner from chef Philip Speer, swings its doors open on Thursday, March 23 on Burnet Road.

Eater ducked inside the Brentwood restaurant, full of red leather booths and banquettes, open kitchen, black walls, a bar with seating, and tables lining the outdoors for al fresco dining. Take a tour of the space below.

As for food, it's safe to expect Speer's signature Asian touches throughout the casual menu full of diner classics. Take the brisket croissants with pho jus dip. Plus there are already-lauded banana split profiteroles, hash browns with foie gras, pomme rosti with creme fraiche and caviar, roasted chicken, burgers, onion rings, and much more.

Rounding out the Bonhomie team are Sean McCusker, formerly of New Orleans restaurant Sylvain and bar Barrel Proof out in New Orleans; Jared Ferguson, who helped Speer fashion downtown cocktail bar Garage's food menu; and beverage director Darrin Ylisto, whom McCusker brought along from Louisiana.

Speer also recently opened a breakfast and coffee trailer, My Name Is Joe Coffee Co. in downtown Austin.
