Sputnik, the unassuming Cold War-inspired burger and hot dog spot on East 6th Street, is now closed. However, its Facebook page assures that it’s "for now," which implies something will take its place. The restaurant had nothing further to add at this time.
The East Side restaurant served up burgers, like the Altered Beast Burger, which came with grilled onions and a secret sauce. The rest of the menu included hot dogs, Frito pie, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries, beers, and cocktails.
Sputnik opened in 2011, when the kitchen was under the charge of Brandon Stratton. He was the chef of the restaurant’s previous tenant Good Knight. Currently, Sputnik’s restaurant team consists of Tiffin Funaro.
Austin bar entrepreneur Randall Stockton owns Sputnik. He also oversees bar Rio Rita, which recently moved from East 6th Street to Chicon, Burnet’s Aristocrat Lounge, which took over the previous dive bar Poodle Lounge, and Red River beer and music venue Beerland.
